A father in Lancaster, California, fired one shot to protect his children and killed an alleged home intrusion suspect.

KABC reports the incident occurred around 6:45 am Sunday morning, after the father “heard loud banging noises.”

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department indicates the suspect “entered the residence through one of the downstairs rear windows.”  Shortly thereafter the suspect allegedly walked into a bedroom upstairs and was shot dead by the father.

KTLA reports that Sgt. Richard Biddle of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau indicated the family was huddled together in the bedroom when the suspect entered. Biddle said, “They were actually on the phone with the Sheriff’s Department reporting someone was breaking into the house.”

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

None of the family members in the home were injured.
