Mayor Pete Buttigieg urged Democrats to defeat the political revolution sparked by President Donald Trump in the 2020 election in an interview published Monday.

“It’s very important that we not only beat this president, but also defeat Trumpism,” he said in an interview with Spanish language news site El País. “In order for that to happen we need a nominee with a broad appeal who can deliver wins in the House and the Senate.”

Buttigeg frequently urges Democrats to elect someone [like him] that is completely new, arguing that there was something wrong with the status quo in Washington that made it possible for Trump to win.

“I believe a lot of people voted for this president not because they think he’s a good person but because he was promising to burn the house down,” he said to El País. “There was an expression of desire for everything to change. The problem is the president is not actually making our lives any better. So now the house is on fire. But we’re the same.”

The South Bend mayor promised a “new normal” where Democrats could rebuild a modern competitive party that could defeat the Republican majority in both the House and the Senate in Congress.

“I guess, the basic idea is paying attention not only to the problems of this White House, but also to the problems that helped this White House emerge in the first place,” he said.

Buttigieg is currently polling in the single digits in early primary states and is stuck at about five percent nationally. The South Bend mayor’s campaign, however, is ready to “flip the switch” in September, launching a renewed campaign push for supporters.
