Major League Baseball announced on Friday that eight players have been suspended from Wednesday’s bench clearing and nasty brawl between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Major League baseball took two days to rule, ultimately suspended Arizona Pitcher Ian Kennedy for 10 games (2 starts). Arizona manager Kirk Gibson and Dodgers manager Don Mattingly were given one-game suspensions. Arizona’s Eric Hinske was given a five-game suspension.
Los Angeles’s Yasiel Puig and Zack Greinke were not suspended but fined. Arizona’s Miguel Montero and Gerardo Parra were also fined but not suspended.
L.A.’s J.P. Howell, Skip Schumaker, and hitting coach Mark McGwire, who at one point looked possessed with anger and had a hold of Arizona coach Matt Williams and manager Kirk Gibson at the same time, were given two-game suspensions. Los Angeles relief pitcher Ronald Belisario, who seemed to be throwing haymakers in defense of his teammates, was suspended for one game.
Kennedy threw at rookie phenom Yasiel Puig and hit him in the nose on Wednesday, and he then threw up high at Dodger pitcher Zack Greinke and hit him near the shoulder.
Kennedy threw at Greinke after Greinke hit Arizona catcher Miguel Montero in the top half of the seventh inning.
After Kennedy hit Greinke, all hell broke loose and the melee ensued.
All players have options to appeal the suspensions.
