English Soccer Star Apologizes for 'Insensitive' Suicide Bomber Costume

A soccer player for Manchester United apologized on Thursday for dressing up as a suicide bomber at a New Year’s Eve costume party.

A photo of defender Chris Smalling was splashed on the front page of the Thursday edition of The Sun; he was “clad in Arab dress, including a head scarf, and with a circuit board and wires strapped to his body.”

Smalling said his outfit was an “attempted comedy play” on a “Jager bomb” drink, described as a mix Jagermeister and Red Bull.

“Chris and his girlfriend hosted a fancy dress party to celebrate Christmas and their belated birthdays with close friends in the assumed privacy of his own home,” a statement from Wasserman Media Group, which represents him, said. “He dressed in a costume consisting of empty bottles of Jagermeister and cans of Red Bull strapped to his chest in an attempted comedy play on the popular ‘Jager bomb drink’.

Smalling is expected to be on England’s World Cup team this year in Brazil.
