One of the world’s best basketball players sent the wife of one of the world’s best golfers out of Quicken Loans Arena on a stretcher with her head in a brace on Thursday night.
LeBron James dove into the crowd for a loose ball during the Cleveland Cavaliers home game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. He violently collided directly with Ellie Day, wife of Jason Day, winner of the 2015 PGA Championship and currently ranked #2 in the world.
“That was Jason Day’s wife Ellie that was taken out on a stretcher,” Craig Sager reported during the broadcast. “She appeared to be alert and conscious.”
James saved the ball from going out of bounds but inadvertently slung it into the hands of the opposition. In the process, the 250-pound player slammed into Mrs. Day, attentive to the action on the court and alert to what came her way, full speed. The lower part of LeBron’s back appeared to crash into Mrs. Day’s face. The force of the collision sent her folding chair backward and collapsing upon itself. Mrs. Day looked as though she may have endured another blow from the floor. James winced in pain as he landed.
Ellie
Sager pointed out that Ellie Day golfed at Ohio State. The couple keep a home near Columbus. The Days occasionally spend their nights at Quicken Loans Arena enjoying Cavaliers games courtside. Sager said of Jason Day: “He seemed to be a little distraught.”
The Cavaliers held on for a 104-100 win after the scary incident. James barely missed a triple-double. He scored 33 points, dished 11 assists, and grabbed nine rebounds.
