A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in New York City shot and killed himself on Friday just blocks from his lower Manhattan office.

The ICE agent walked down to the waterfront Chelsea Park in New York City on Friday and shot himself with a .40 caliber Sig Sauer service pistol. The incident occurred at Pier 40, the New York Daily News reported.

The 42-year-old agent, whose identity has not yet been released, entered the building that contains the park’s offices and soccer fields. He shot himself in a walkway located on the ground floor, officials told New York Daily News reporters Graham Rayman and Ben Kochman.

The agent was treated at the scene for his gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to Lenox Hill Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.

“Tragically, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportation officer from the New York field office suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and has passed away,” ICE said in a written statement released on Friday.

The federal agency tasked with enforcing the nation’s immigration laws said its Office of Professional Standards is investigating the apparent suicide.

While the agent’s identity has not been released pending notification of relatives, it was disclosed that he worked at an ICE field office just blocks away from the scene of the shooting.

The news of the agent’s apparent suicide was first reported by the New York City Park Advocates. Geoffrey Croft reported an unidentified source as saying, “It was heartbreaking, heartbreaking.” Croft said there were visitors to the park just a few feet away from the shooting scene.

One source told the Daily Mail’s Alexandra Genova that the agent walked calmly into the park, took out his pistol and shot himself in the head.

No motive for the apparent suicide was released pending the result of the department’s investigation.

Chelsea Park is the home of the New York Nights of the American National Rugby League. It is also the primary office of the New York River Park Trust.
