U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested a human smuggler in southern California for smuggling four Chinese nationals in the trunk of his car.

CBP officers observed a man approaching the San Ysidro border crossing in a 2014 Chrysler 200 sedan on Tuesday evening. A CBP K-9 officer alerted to something in the trunk. The officer asked the driver to open the trunk. The officers found four people later to be determined to be Chinese nationals inside the trunk of the car, information obtained by Breitbart Texas from CBP officials stated.

The K-9 is part of the San Ysidro unit’s Narcotics/Human Detector search team.

The officers found three women and one man crammed into the trunk space. Officers helped the four out of the trunk and escorted them to a secure location for processing, officials stated. During a background check, the officers confirmed the four people as Chinese nationals with no documentation to enter the U.S.

Officers took the driver of the vehicle, a U.S. 24-year-old citizen, into custody and turned him over to the Metropolitan Correctional Center. He faces possible human smuggling charges. The CBP seized the Chrysler 200.

“Concealing persons in vehicles is dangerous and could have severe consequences,” Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego Pete Flores said in a written statement.  “San Ysidro CBP officers stopped a violation of our immigration law and were able to resolve the incident safely.”

Aliens smuggled in unsafe conditions in vehicles are frequently injured or killed when a driver is involved in a crash. Often, drivers will flee from Border Patrol or CBP officers to avoid prosecution for smuggling.
