Border Patrol agents arrested a Mexican gang member after he illegally re-entered the U.S. in the El Paso-Juárez Metropolitan Border Area. The Mexican national has a history of violent crimes and at least one deportation.

Border Patrol agents assigned to the Santa Teresa Station encountered the man while he walked past an elementary school in Sunland Park, New Mexico, located about a half-mile from the U.S.-Mexico Border. After becoming suspicious the man had illegally crossed the border, the agents stopped the man and inquired about his immigration status. The learned the man had just crossed and entered the U.S. illegally, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.

Sunland Park is located on the Texas-New Mexico state line and is part of the El Paso-Juárez Metropolitan Border Area.

The agents arrested the Mexican national and took him to the station for processing. The agents identified the man as 39-year-old Angel Rogelio Borunda Parra. The records indicated Borunda has a history of violent crime and drug-related convictions in the U.S. including aggravated assault, possession of cocaine, and driving under the influence. Immigration officials previously removed him following his convictions. The records also indicated Borunda is affiliated with a prison gang.

The agents charged Borunda with illegal entry after removal. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in federal prison.

Border Patrol agents arrested more than 15,000 illegal immigrants in and around the El Paso-Juárez Metropolitan Border Area during Fiscal Year 2018 through mid-April, officials said.

“Many of these subjects have criminal records and are a danger to our communities,” CBP officials stated. “These incidents display how vigilance by U.S. Border Patrol Agents and the rapid response by the agency prevents the furtherance of convicted criminals into our communities while keeping our nations’ borders safe.”
