Tuesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), a candidate for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, was asked by Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin if he would commit to naming a woman as his running mate if he were to win the party’s nomination.
Sanders declined to commit, but said he would give “serious thought” to the possibility.
“I’m not going to commit,” Sanders said. “I think you have to look at the best candidates you can. But I think your point is well taken. I think the women of this country, the people of this country think it would be a great idea to have a woman as vice president and something I would give very, very serious thought to.”
When asked for specific women, Sanders offered one name, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), but said there were others as well.
“Are there any woman? Yes, there are many women who would be qualified for that job,” he replied. “I think it’s too early to be speculating on that. But I think as you know, there are people in life today – Elizabeth Warren has been a real champion of standing up for working families, taking on Wall Street. There are fantastic women who have been active in all kinds of fights. They could make great vice presidential candidates.”
