Ex-Obama Security Adviser Ben Rhodes: ‘Worries’ Me Government Can’t Control Our Facebook Feeds

Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” Ben Rhodes, former Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications for President Barack Obama, said it “worries” him that the government cannot edit Facebook feeds to combat the spreading of fake news during an election.

“The government didn’t have a lot of capacity to deal with this,” Rhodes told host Andrea Mitchell. “I mean, we can’t edit people’s Facebook feeds and say ‘that’s fake news, and that’s not’. And what worries me today, Andrea, is that we still don’t have a lot of capacity, and frankly our government’s probably not doing anything to prevent this.”

Rhodes went on to say that as a result of the government not controlling Facebook feeds, the “likelihood” of Russia spreading fake news on Facebook in future elections “is very high.”
