Mnuchin: ‘I Will Follow the Law’ on Releasing Trump’s Tax Returns

On Monday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Mornings with Maria,” Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin stated that he will “follow the law,” on releasing President Trump’s tax returns, and that he wants to ensure the IRS doesn’t become “weaponized.”

Mnuchin said, “I am involved here. Because it’s my responsibility as secretary to oversee the IRS, and that’s a job that I take very seriously. This isn’t an issue just about the president’s tax returns and congressional oversight. This is an issue about protecting Americans, and, as we’ve said, we’re analyzing the law, we’re consulting with the Department of Justice. I want to make sure that the IRS is not weaponized like it was in the Nixon administration, and you can imagine how dangerous it would be if the IRS was weaponized. And, can you imagine if, when Kevin Brady (R-TX) was chairman, if he had requested tax returns of prominent Democrats inside and outside the government, how dangerous that would have been? So, I will follow the law, but this is a law and constitutional issues we’re going to look at very carefully, so that I protect American taxpayers, not just now, but in the future as well.”
