A group of Scottish school children returning from Italy on a school trip had a terrifying experience when migrants outside Calais smashed the window of their coach as they traveled through. The 35 pupils and their seven teachers were unharmed in the incident.

Migrants and police have continued to clash outside the French port, as the migrants continue their tactic of pulling large objects such as tree trunks onto roads approaching the port at night in an attempt to stem the flow of traffic sufficiently to climb aboard UK bound vehicles.

Missiles such as rocks and debris are often thrown by the migrants at police and passing vehicles as part of their strategy of causing mayhem.

It appears that the coach, carrying pupils and teachers from Portree High School, on Skye, was caught up in one of these missile attacks as they made their way home from a skiing trip in the Italian Alps, the Scotsman has reported.

Drew Millar, a councillor for the island and Highland Council’s education committee chairman, said: “I have heard that the children are all safe and there were no injuries.

“It happened during the night while they were on the way home.

“The bus was attacked by migrants and at least one window was broken. It was decided that, rather than stop the bus, they should carry on. They were able to continue on and were lucky no-one was injured.”

The incident was reported to police and border control officials at Calais, who merely decreed the coach safe to continue its journey.

Catherine MacDonald, the school’s headmistress added: “Everyone has returned home safe and sound from what was a fantastic ski trip with snowsports certificates under their belts.

“No-one was injured as a result of the incident at Calais which was efficiently dealt with by our coach operator.”

It follows an incident in December when a tour bus belonging to the Northern Irish band Ash was pelted with bricks as it passed through Calais. One of the bricks smashed through the driver’s side window, striking him in the head.

In a separate incident, a migrant was seen clinging on to the cab of a lorry and threatening the driver with a hammer, while others in the vicinity wielded iron bars.
