The operator of a Swiss hotel has apologized after posting special signs for “Jewish guests,” including one telling them to shower before entering the swimming pool.
“To our Jewish guests, women, men and children, please take a shower before you go swimming,” one sign read at the Aparthaus Paradies in the Alpine resort village of Arosa . “If you break the rules I’m forced to cloes (sic) the swimming pool for you.”
Another message read: “To our Jewish guests: You are allowed to approach the fridge between the hours: 10.00-11.00 in the morning and 16.30-17.30 in the evening. I hope you understand that our team does not like to be disturbed every time.”
Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely issued a statement expressing her outrage at signage after it was first revealed on an Israel TV station. She called it “an antisemitic act of the worst and ugliest kind.”
The hotel’s operators responded immediately and said it was all a misunderstanding and there was no anti-Semitic intent involved.
Representative Ruth Thomann told the Algemeiner that she had made the public sign and displayed it because “some of these guests went swimming with clothes on, with T-shirts, and didn’t take a shower.”
As for the refrigerator directions, the Algemeiner reports the same representative said use of the hotel’s kitchen and refrigerators was a privilege reserved for Jewish guests traveling with kosher food. “The refrigerators in the rooms are small, so I told them, ‘You can store some small things with our stuff, but don’t go in every time,’” Thomann said.
The hotel management further told Channel 2 it meant no harm by the signs. “There was no anti-Semitic intent and the signs were removed,” it said. “We have no problem with Jewish guests at the hotel.”
