Nebraska state senator Ernie Chambers (D-Omaha) is facing a major backlash for comments he made on March 20 comparing American police officers to ISIS terrorists and talking about shooting them.

According to, Chambers said, “My ISIS is the police.” He added, “The police are licensed to kill us — children, old people.”

Chambers suggested police can shoot first and ask questions once the smoke has cleared. For this reason, he said that if he carried a gun it would not be so he could protect himself or his family from other citizens, but from the police.

He said: “I’d want to shoot [an officer] first then ask questions later, like they say a cop ought to do.”

Chambers also suggested Americans do not have to go to the Middle East to find terrorism:

I wouldn’t go to Syria, I wouldn’t go to Iraq, I wouldn’t go to Afghanistan, I wouldn’t go to Yemen, I wouldn’t to Tunisia, I wouldn’t go to Lebanon, I wouldn’t go to Jordan, I would do it right here. Nobody from ISIS ever terrorized us as a people as the police do us daily.

To be clear, Mediaite points out that Chamber’s senatorial district is riddled with racial tensions and “clashes with local police.”
