On Saturday, 2016 Democratic nominee hopeful Hillary Clinton spoke in a speech about race on the heels of the Charleston, SC shooting earlier in the week and said she wanted to change how blacks are viewed in America.
Clinton stated as of now, “A young black man in a hoodie still evokes fear,” while the news reports of poverty, crime and discrimination “rarely prompt us to question our own assumptions or privilege.”
“For a lot of well meaning open-minded white people, the sight of a young black man in a hoodie still evokes a twinge of fear and news reports of poverty and crime and discrimination evokes sympathy, even empathy, but too rarely do they prompt us to question our own assumptions or privilege,” she continued. “We can not hide from any of these hard truths about race and justice in America. We have to name them and own them and then change them.”
