Vince Wilfork Petitions Patriots for Release

Vince Wilfork, a Patriots team captain and one of the few remaining links to the team’s last Super Bowl victory, has asked the team for his release. The NFL Network first reported the story.

The nose guard, who claims he can dunk a basketball, has combined size with athleticism in becoming one of the league’s premier interior defensive linemen. But on the wrong side of thirty, and coming off Achilles surgery, Wilfork’s status as an elite player remains an open question.

Slated to earn $7.5 million this season, and count for $11.6 million against the salary cap, Wilfork had been in talks with the Patriots to restructure his contract. But the chasm between the number envisioned by the team and the salary desired by the player evidently remains too wide.
