With more than 22,000 migrants being held in custody, a source within U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the Border Patrol is being forced to cut routine patrols along the border. In some areas, highway inspection checkpoints have been closed to accommodate another increase in the number of migrant crossings. On Monday alone, the agency apprehended more than 7,700 migrants nationwide.

Maura Healey has declared a state of emergency over a surge in migrants that she claims has overwhelmed the state’s social services apparatus.

Federal authorities under the Biden administration released hundreds of migrants onto the streets of Brownsville, Texas, with notices to appear in court for future hearings. While government officials claim to be taking a hard line on asylum seekers, for the migrants being released, the journey is seen as a success.

The mayor of El Paso declared a disaster “due to a humanitarian, security, and economic crisis resulting from a mass migration” through the city. As freezing weather approaches El Paso, a homeless shelter reports it is beyond capacity due to the surge in migrants being released on the city’s streets. Elsewhere in the city, two migrants were attacked and robbed outside a bus station by another migrant illegally present from Mexico.

President Biden will defer plans to end the virus control protocol that allows border authorities to hasten the deportation of any migrant.

Approximately 40 percent of Border Patrol agents assigned to the southwest border are being pulled from front-line national security duties to provide humanitarian services for migrants families crossing the border in record numbers.
