Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is reported to be “safe and in no danger” after a helicopter search by the Fort Worth Police Department. Officers searched for Manziel in reference to a possible assault of an ex-girlfriend that may or may not have occurred early Saturday morning.
Police have not revealed where Johnny Footbturned up, but said they had responded to a 2 a.m. call where they found a woman who said she had been “in a disturbance” with her ex-boyfriend. She identified that man as Johnny Manziel, according to a Fort Worth Star-Telegram report.
“The preliminary investigation determined that a possible assault had occurred in that jurisdiction or multiple jurisdictions,” a statement from the Fort Worth Police Department revealed. “The complainant was uncooperative with officers on scene.” Police said she expressed concern about the Heisman Trophy-winner’s well-being.
Police said they are not certain where the alleged assault took place and could find no crime scene within their jurisdiction. They notified the Dallas Police Department as the woman indicated they may have been involved in a disturbance in that city.
In October, police in Avon, Ohio stopped Manziel after hearing a “report of a white Nissan traveling at a high rate of speed with a female passenger trying to exit the vehicle and the male driver pulling her back inside.” Manziel, the driver, admitted to imbibing two drinks. The police declined to make an arrest. The same TCU student involved in the Ohio dispute with Manziel also called police in Fort Worth Saturday morning.
At one point, Fort Worth police used helicopter resources in the search for Manziel. When asked if this was normal policy or if Manziel was getting special attention because of this status as a public figure, Corporal Tracey Knight responded that they will “deploy all useful personnel or tools available to fully investigate any call. Especially when there is a concern for the health or safety of a person.”
One former Fort Worth city council member, now a prominent attorney who often represents police and firemen, joked that the helicopter “probably took Manziel to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ house,” the Star-Telegram reported. He then deemed the helicopter’s use appropriate if the senior officer at the scene made that decision. “That’s what it’s there for,” he said.
For now, the police continue their investigation into the possible assault and the cloud of drama around “Johnny Football” remains. No arrests were made.
