Shannon Sharpe: Black People Need to Get Out of Saying Things White People Would Get in Trouble for Saying

Thursday on Fox Sports’ “Undisputed,” co-host Shannon Sharpe argued that those commenting on athletes needed to end the practice of basing their assessments on the race of the athlete.

Sharpe used Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson as examples.

“Let’s just say for the sake of argument, [Cowboys linebacker] Sean Lee says, ‘You know what, Cam Newton is pretty good for a black quarterback. There are not a whole of them in the NFL, but man, that dude can drive the ball down the field, he can make every throw on the field, every blade of grass you must protect because man, Cam Newton, he can throw the ball.’ Don’t do that. We need to get out of that way of that thinking. No one says Jordy Nelson is good for a white receiver. Jordy Nelson is a good receiver.”

“We need to get out of this because as an African-American [we] think we can say something that if the opposite race said the same thing, we would be offended. Because I know the outrage, what would have happened had Sean Lee, a white linebacker, said Cam Newton is pretty good for a black quarterback because, man, he can throw the football. Don’t do that.”
