Actress Julianne Hough Apologizes for Blackface Halloween Costume

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Oct. 27 (UPI)–Actress and professional dancer Julianne Hough apologized on Twitter for dressing in blackface for a Beverly Hills, Calif., Halloween party.

The “Safe Haven” actress darkened her skin to dress as the character Crazy Eyes–played by African-American actress Uzo Aduba–from the television series “Orange is the New Black,” Us Weekly reported Saturday.

To complete the costume, she wore an orange prison jumpsuit, an identification badge and had her hair in knots, People reported.

Hough apologized on Twitter Saturday after receiving backlash for wearing blackface.

“I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created,” she said. “It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.”
