Iraq Joining With Kurdish Forces In Effort to Retake Mosul

On June 11 Iraq announced it will join with Kurdish forces in an attempt to drive insurgents from Mosul.

Mosul was “seized” by “an Al Qaeda splinter group” on June 10.

According to Reuters, Iraq foreign minister Hoshyar Zebari said: “There will be closer cooperation between Baghdad and the regional Kurdistan government to work together to flush out those foreign fighters.”

He said Al Qaeda’s takeover of Mosul was “dramatic” and poses a “serious, mortal threat to the country.”

Zebari did not provide any specifics about how Iraq and Kurdish forces plan to drive Al Qaeda out, but he said they have to be driven out soon: “You cannot leave these people to stay there to entrench themselves for a long time.”
