VIDEO: Car Plunges Off Cliff Along California Coast

A dashcam video shot by a passing motorist on Monday captured the moment a car plunged off a cliff along the California coast on Highway 1.

The video, which the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office released on Wednesday, showed a grey SUV speeding along the shoulder before appearing to drive off the cliff without showing any signs of slowing down.

The car appears to be airborne for a split second before it goes out of the frame.

One witness, the driver whose dashcam video shot the moment the car drove off the cliff, reported seeing the SUV plunge off the cliff around 11 a.m. Monday, the Mercury News reported.

CalFire, the California Highway Patrol, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, and the San Mateo County Fire Department all contributed in their search for the driver in and around the cliff.

Rescue workers have not found any pieces of the vehicle or its passengers as of Wednesday afternoon.

Rescue crews had to temporarily halt search efforts on Monday due to a high surf advisory and have not been able to continue as of Wednesday afternoon, according to Bert Diaz, a California Highway Patrol public information officer.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash. Diaz said there appears to be only one witness, noting the video itself does not explain why the vehicle went over the edge.

“All it shows is the vehicle veering off the cliff,” Diaz said. “There’s no before, and so at this point, we don’t have any information.”
