A nine-year-old girl was allegedly attacked by a woman with a hammer in her Oakland-area school Friday morning, according to CBS San Francisco.
Hasseemah Diame, the mother of another student at the school, was arrested at the scene and will reportedly be charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The girl was hospitalized in serious condition but is expected to recover.
According to reports, Diame walked onto the playground at Lafayette Elementary School during recess armed with a hammer and took the girl into a nearby bathroom.
“She was able to lure this girl away from the play yard during recess into an adjacent bathroom there by the school. Once in the bathroom, the adult proceeded to assault the girl with a hammer,” school spokesman Troy Flint said in the report.
The attack was apparently “serious enough to draw blood.”
NBC Bay Area wrote that the attack may have been “revenge” as part of an ongoing feud between the girl’s family and her attacker, according to Flint.
“We don’t know the reason for the attack. The early speculation – and this is not definitive – this act evolved out of a family feud, which is off-campus and spilled into the school yard,” Flint told NBC.
“It’s very horrible, because I wouldn’t want that happening to my kid,” Antoniette Badio, a parent at the school, told CBS.
