Shannon Watts Revels in Number of States Denying Teachers Self-Defense

During a June 11 appearance on MSNBC’s Now with Alex Wagner, Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts reveled in the number of states denying teachers the right to bear arms for self-defense and said her group’s role in preventing teachers from being armed is proof of Moms Demand’s success.

In other words, defenseless is a virtue.

Wagner told Watts there seemed to be a “robust debate” favoring gun control at one point following the heinous attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School, but that debate appears to have vanished. She then asked Watts to give some specific examples how this perception might be wrong–of how gun control may actually still be winning.

Watts said:

I want to be 100% clear: we are winning. If you talk to moms on the ground, as part of Moms Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety, we will tell you we are winning. Eighteen states have closed their background check loophole, we have gotten fourteen states–just this session–to say, “No” to campus carry, [and] fifteen states said, “No” to guns in K-12 schools.

So defenselessness is Watts’ success. The fact that women on campus live unarmed in what Slate described as a “rape crisis” is what Watts is proud of. The fact that educators live at the mercy of the next Adam Lanza in states that bar armed teachers is what makes her think her group is winning.

Yet, the true egregiousness of Watt’s position is best seen when you consider the fact that she has armed guards, and to keep her safe and secure, they carry the guns she fights to deny teachers and college students from carrying.

On April 27, 2014, Breitbart News reported on how Everytown spokeswoman Erika Soto Lamb defended the fact that Bloomberg’s gun control leadership has armed guards.

Lamb let the cat out of the bag in response to a questioner who tweeted, “Why do all the big anti-gun advocates have security who carry loaded guns?” Lamb responded, “Because ppl on ur side of debate threaten our lives. We r not anti-gun. Why do u criticize our security? Same u want 4 self.”

Note the equivocation: Side A carries guns for self-defense, so Side B, which happens to be anti-gun, also carries guns for self-defense. Missing in this equation is the fact that Watts and the rest of her Side B team do everything they can to be sure teachers and students do not get the benefit that guns provide in the hands of law-abiding citizens.
