Sam, the dog, was found dutifully sitting next to her human owner when first responders found him dead in his Oklahoma home last week. And in a fitting end, Sam was allowed to attend Arthur’s funeral.

Arthur died on Thursday, March 7, and when the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office was called to open the man’s door, they found Sam sitting expectantly next to her dead owner. The dog was said to be confused and agitated when her owner was taken away by the EMTs. According to police, Sam howled for some time after being separated from Arthur.

Maeghan Olsen, Founder and Director At 1 Day Ranch, in Bethel Acres, Oklahoma, stepped in to try and get Sam included in Arthur’s burial to perhaps give the dog some closure. Finally, Olsen secured an invitation for Sam and they both attended Arthur’s services on Saturday, Fox 6 said.

Olsen reported that Sam “wanted to look nice, so she wore a pretty pink scarf.”

Arthur’s brother was also in attendance, Olsen said in a Facebook post, and Sam was curious about the man. “We think maybe he smells like Arthur,” Olsen wrote.

“We allowed her to see Arthur one last time when they opened the casket,” Olsen wrote of Sam’s last look at her beloved owner, “she was interested at first, she definitely recognized his face… but it was different from before, she knew that he was no longer there.”

“Sam is now back at the ranch and taking a nap,” Olsen concluded in her report. “We hope [Arthur] is comforted knowing his girl is safe and loved.”
