No Triple Crown: Oxbow Upsets Orb to Win Preakness

There will not be a Triple Crown winner again this year as Oxbow defeated Orb, the Kentucky Derby winner, at the Preakness Stakes on Saturday in Baltimore, Maryland.

Gary Stevens, the legendary 50-year-old jockey who came out of retirement, rode Oxbow to victory.

Oxbow Trainer D. Wayne Lukas may have said it best after the race.

“I get paid to spoil dreams,” he said.

Orb won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago and was the overwhelming favorite to win the Preakness, but the thoroughbred finished sixth.

The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978, and the Triple Crown will not be in play at the Belmont Stakes in three weeks.

Oxbow, at 15-1, paid $32.80 to win.
