Pac-12 to Restrict Player Contact in Football Practices

The Pac-12 will limit the amount of contact that will be allowed during football practices. Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said specific details would be forthcoming at the league’s media day in July and said the league-wide guidelines would be “less than what the NCAA permits.”

“In our discussions it became clear this is a topic our coaches have focused on, the health and well-being of their student-athletes,” Scott said, according to USA Today. “They’ve self-imposed (restrictions on hitting) already.”

Scott reportedly said this was a “high priority” and continued, “You’re not gonna eliminate injuries from athletics … You’re not gonna eliminate that by the time a kid comes to college they’ve already been playing a sport for many, many years and have (had) many cumulative impacts (to the head.) But we want to get together and do everything that’s possible to educate and be as smart as possible in minimizing injuries.”
