Golf’s newest great Rory McIlroy has called off his much talked-about engagement to tennis beauty Caroline Wozniacki, but the Internet is sparing no time to mourn. Someone is already taking bets on who McIlroy’s next girlfriend will be.
The golfer from Northern Ireland and the Danish tennis player got engaged in 2011, but as they were starting to send out the wedding invitations, McIlroy said he got cold feet and decided that he just wasn’t ready to settle down. The 10th ranked golfer called off his nuptials admitting the whole thing was his fault.
“The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails,” McIlroy said on May 21. “I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had.”
With the golfer back on the prowl a bookie decided to begin taking bets on who will become McIlroy’s next “birdie.”
The site helpfully gives betters a list of birds to choose from and the current odds for a winner. As we discovered in a May 20 Tweet by Paddy Power, appearing in the betting pool are such candidates as Ulster Rugby Club cheerleader and former McIlroy girlfriend Holly Sweeney (3/1), Welsh singer Charlotte Church (50/1), American pop singers Taylor Swift (33/1) and Miley Cyrus (80/1), tennis great Serena Williams (100/1), and even Tiger Wood’s former wife, Elin Nordegren (275/1).
The Irish bookie taking the bets says that only single girls are allowed on the list and the winner must have chosen the right “birdie” by December 31, 2015 or all bets are off.
