China’s state-run Global Times newspaper applauded the United States on Monday for offering to mediate the ongoing Kashmir sovereignty dispute between India and Pakistan, admitting China stands to benefit significantly if Kashmir becomes peaceful enough for Beijing to invest in infrastructure products there.

The Election Commission of India issued a ruling on Wednesday banning a biography film about incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the duration of the election, which begins on Thursday and will last through May 19. A complaint was filed alleging the film was intended to “manipulate, influence, and impress viewers and voters.”

The conflict between India and Pakistan in Kashmir apparently escalated significantly overnight, as Pakistan claims it shot down two Indian warplanes, captured two pilots, and conducted six airstrikes against ground targets on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LOC). As with Tuesday’s Indian airstrikes on Pakistani territory, both sides dispute many of the details of these aerial engagements.
