The Department of Justice filed an amicus curiae, or “friend of the court” brief Friday defending Texas’s tough Senate Bill 4 (SB 4) in the lawsuit seeking to prevent the law, which seeks to rein in the state’s so called “sanctuary” cities, from taking effect.
The Texas border county of El Paso filed a federal lawsuit last week against the State to stop the “sanctuary” cities ban from going into effect, alleging the new law is unconstitutional, discriminatory, and impedes public safety efforts.
DREAMERs and undocumented supporters were at the Texas Capitol to protest the anti-sanctuary legislation debated by the House of Representatives. Several “sanctuary city” sheriffs also showed their support.
Texas state senators passed a bill to punish sanctuary cities, counties, and colleges, that fail to cooperate with federal immigration officials. The passage came on a straight party-line vote, 21-10.
The Speaker of the Texas House is joining with Governor Greg Abbott and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick in calling for an end to Sanctuary Cities in the Lone Star State.
“Speaker Straus will work with fellow House Members, Governor Abbott and law enforcement to ensure that there are no sanctuary cities in Texas,” said Jason Embry, communications director for Speaker Straus, in an email to Breitbart Texas.
A Texas state senator has filed a bill to “eliminate Sanctuary Cities in the State of Texas.” The bill will require local governments and law enforcement agencies uphold current immigration laws.
On Monday, California began covering health care for poor illegal aliens under the age of 19 with potential to cover adults in the future.
The California State Assembly Health Committee passed SB 4 Tuesday on a straight party-line vote, but not without vocal objection from citizen lobbyists. The bill would appropriate $170-740 million annually in taxpayer funds in part to grant illegal aliens Medi-Cal coverage.

Senate Bill 4, known as the Health for All Act, passed in California’s Senate on Tuesday, 28-11, taking illegal immigrants residing in the Golden State one step closer to attaining health insurance coverage.
The California Senate’s Appropriations Committee passed SB 4 to give health care to all illegal/undocumented aliens. Breitbart News estimates that based on the non-partisan Legislative Analysts’ Office projections, SB 4 will cost at least $1 billion, and the cost will undoubtedly go much higher over time.
The Texas Senate passed Senate Bill 4 (SB 4), the tax credit scholarship bill that will allow low income and special needs families who are in failing public schools to get assistance to pay for private tuition. SB 4 was authored by State Senator Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood) and passed with bipartisan support. The final vote of 18-12 was taken on Tuesday, April 21.
This Wednesday, lawmakers in California’s Senate Health Committee will consider whether taxpayers should foot the healthcare bill for approximately one million illegal immigrants in the Golden State who are without insurance.
