Nancy Pelosi: ‘Congressman Conyers Should Resign’

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called on Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) to resign on Thursday.

Pelosi said, “I pray for Congressman Conyers and his family and wish them well. However, Congressman Conyers should resign.”

Multiple women accused Conyers of sexual harassment, and while the Michigan Democrat continues to deny any wrongdoing, he admitted to a $27,000 settlement with a former congressional staffer in 2015.

Conyers left Washington, DC, on Tuesday after a meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus, where they discussed his future in Congress.

Conyers reportedly has been admitted to a hospital in Detroit, Michigan, with stress-related problems.

A Detroit-based ABC affiliated also reported on Thursday that Conyers will not seek re-election in the 2018 midterm elections.

Until recently, Conyers resisted urges from fellow Democrats to step down; however, he recently resigned from his position as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee.

Conyers is the longest-serving active member of Congress and a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), another member of the Black Caucus, compared Congressman John Conyers’ accusers to child murderer Susan Smith, who falsely claimed a black man abducted her kids.

Clyburn argued that these accusations of sexual misconduct may not be credible because all of the accusations come from white women.
