Sweden’s second largest airport was closed this morning after a bomb threat was telephoned in about a flight from London to Stockholm.

Specialist bomb police are on the scene at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport this morning after a Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) aircraft flying to Stockholm was diverted after air traffic control received a bomb threat while it was mid-flight.

Parked on a remote hardstanding away from the rest of the airport, the passengers and crew were safely disembarked from the plane and put onto airport buses, awaiting interrogation by the police, reports TheLocal. The fact the threat came in while the plane was flying gave police “reason to investigate if there are any connections”, said a spokesman.

Passenger and pro British racing driver Tom Onslow-Cole has been live tweeting his experience from the ground, remarking that the group had not been told anything by police but instead were finding out about the bomb threat on their plane by reading the on-line news.

Police are taking the threat seriously and bomb technicians are now examining the plane. It would be some time until whether the threat was concrete will be known for certain, as a police spokesman remarked: “Bomb technicians are doing their work, but it’s not a job you can accelerate. It takes a bit of time in researching the circumstances”, reports the Expressen newspaper.

Departing planes have been allowed to resume their flights within the past hour, but Gothenburg Landvetter is still closed to incoming traffic at this time. A safety cordon of 300 meters remains around the aircraft while police investigate, and there are no predictions being given on when the airport may reopen fully. A spokesman for Swedavia, who operate the airport told press “we are awaiting police instructions”.
