While speaking to the Santa Fe County Federation of Democratic Women Gubernatorial Forum this month, New Mexico gubernatorial candidate Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) called for a ban on “high magazine cartridges.”

On May 28, 2018, Rio Grande Firearm Rights published a video of her statement. She said, “Ban ‘assault weapons,’ ban high magazine cartridges, make sure that you’re closing every single purchase loophole.”

Lujan Grisham is currently the U.S. Representative for New Mexico’s 1st District. One of the pages on her House website lists other controls she supports. Those include universal background checks, a ban on bump stocks, and waiting periods for firearm purchases.

Ironically, if Lujan Grisham had her way — and an “assault weapons” ban, a “high magazine cartridge” ban, universal background checks, a bump stock ban, and waiting periods were all law — the May 18, 2018, shooting at Texas’s Santa Fe High School would still have occurred as the gunman reportedly used a revolver and a shotgun to kill ten innocents. Moreover, the April 16, 2007, Virginia Tech shooting would have still occurred because that gunman passed a background check for his firearms then used only handguns to kill 32 unarmed innocents. The January 8, 2011, attempt on Gabby Giffords’ life would have also occurred because that gunman passed a background check then used a handgun to severely wound Giffords and kill six others. And the list goes on.
