Final Four Moving to Cable in 2014

The men’s college basketball Final Four and national title games, which have historically been on broadcast television, will be shown on cable television for the first time in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

According to Turner Sports, in 2014 and 2015, “TBS will televise the NCAA Final Four national semi-finals and CBS will broadcast the NCAA National Championship game. “

In 2016, though, TBS will Final Four and the national title games. The following year, CBS will broadcast the Final Four and championship games. The networks will alternate through 2024.

As live sporting events almost always guarantee top ratings in an age when the media landscape is becoming more fragmented and splintered, cable channels are making a play for events that had been exclusive to broadcast networks.

The networks have yet to decide if the CBS announcing crew will call the Final Four games on TBS next season, or if TBS’s college basketball announcers will call the semi-finals games while Jim Nantz, of CBS, does the play-by-play for the national title game.
