Polish police have launched an investigation after a mosque and Muslim cultural centre in the national capital Warsaw had its windows smashed overnight.

Security guards at the building, which was opened in 2015 and contains both a cultural centre and mosque, became aware of a disturbance around 1 am Monday morning and called police to the scene five hours later, reports wPolityce. By that time those responsible for the damage — reported to be two individuals throwing stones — had already left the scene, but Warsaw police spokesman Mariusz Mrozek said officers were reviewing CCTV footage to identify suspects.

“We are actively involved in identifying the person or persons involved in this event. We will check the monitoring system. We are collecting all information that may lead to an arrest,” said Mrozek.

Damage extended to broken windows, smashed air conditioners, and damage to the mosque garden. There were no injuries.

The Warsaw Muslim community, the Associated Press reports, runs to a “few thousand members” in a city of nearly two million.
