San Diego Mayor: Change Rules to Allow Joint U.S.-Mexico Cross-Border Olympics Bid

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, a Democrat, said he wanted to pursue a joint Olympics bid with Mexico even after he was informed by the United States Olympic Committee that international rules prevent the two countries from doing so. According to USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky, Christopher Sullivan, the USOC's chief of protocol and bids, informed Filner's team that the "International Olympic Committee charter doesn't allow for bordering countries to host Summer Games." Even though the USOC spokesman said, "there's no opportunity for them to bid together," Filner said he was "undaunted" and said rules can always be changed. 5 May 2013

Only 9 of Top 25 NBA Players Still Playing

The NBA playoffs are down to eight teams, and only nine of the top 25 players in the league are still playing according to the anticipated "Total Value" prepared by Breitbart Sports. This rating is a per game variation of John Hollinger's landmark Value Added ratings (which is "per season," and not the same thing as our "Value Add" for college players). Whether you use Hollinger's ratings or this variation, it is clear that LeBron James is by far the best player in basketball, and Kevin Durant is by far the second best player. The Top 25 is below. 5 May 2013

Curry, Warriors Longshots Against Spurs

Monday 9:30 p.m. - Golden State at San Antonio: If the three-pointer is the equalizer, then Stephen Curry must be the greatest equalizer of all. He broke the record for most playoff three-pointers in the Warriors opening round upset, and is virtually equal in value to both Tim Duncan and Tony Parker of the Spurs. Unfortunately for the Warriors, the Spurs have an edge in the match-ups of their second best through eighth best players. 5 May 2013

Bulls Fly to Miami for Tough Series

Monday 7 p.m. - Chicago at Miami: The big three are looking like prohibitive favorites for another NBA title, and with Derrick Rose still not playing this series looks lopsided. When you get past the top three players, the Bulls bring emerging star Jimmy Butler who is the best chance to slow James and Wade, while the Heat counters with the answer to their problems at center in tattoed Chris Anderson. The Bulls upset Saturday was huge, but winning a whole series from the Heat is an even longer shot. 5 May 2013

Grizzlies Could Edge Short-Handed Thunder

Sunday 1 p.m. - Memphis at Oklahoma City: Kevin Durant is clearly the second best player in the league. If he still had James Harden (sixth best but playing for Houston) and Russell Westbrook (seventh best, injured) hen OKC would have a better trio than the Heat and a real chance at the title. Unfortunately, without those two they appear to have an uphill battle even to get past the Memphis Grizzlies. 4 May 2013

AP Praises Unquestioning Gay Advocacy, with No Opposing Views

In this opinion piece, the AP continues to steady media advocacy for support of individuals making public statements of their sexuality at an early age, citing young athletes. The only hints of a counter view is a passing reference to one set of parents who have "come to terms," and another comment from an athlete that he feels he has to try twice as hard to be accepted - even though he cites no negative feedback from his teammates over his sexuality. 4 May 2013

NBA Revenue Depends on Game 7s

Just how dependent on Game 7s is the NBA for playoff revenue? A review by Breitbart Sports of advertising figures presented by Ad Week makes it clear how dependent the NBA, as well as the NHL and Major League Baseball playoffs, is on Game 7s. Unlike the BCS, NFL and March Madness who will be almost guaranteed a billion dollars a year. Saturday at 8 p.m. EDT on TNT, the Bulls and Nets give the NBA the first Game 7 of the 2012-13 playoffs. 4 May 2013

NBA: Little May Madness Can Hold Down Revenue

In the first week of March Madness, 36 games are played and every game is an elimination game for both teams. Derby Forecast: Rain, Extra Security at Largest Sporting Event Since Boston Bombings

Rain and extra security measures slowed down the crowds at Saturday's Kentucky Derby, but thousands of poncho-covered racing fans filled Churchill Downs despite the odds. Fans were unfazed as Kentucky National Guardsmen searched bags and passed metal-detecting wands over race-goers in Louisville. The tightened security imposed in response to the Boston Marathon bombings was similar to actions taken after 9/11. 4 May 2013

WWII Veterans Meet 'Normandy Invasion' Derby Horse Named in Honor of Them

For most of his 20 years in the business, ex-soldier and auto dealer-turned-thoroughbred owner Rick Porter has been naming horses to honor veterans. Porter never saw combat--he served in Korea for two years in the 1960s--and never forgot a haunting visit to the Normandy beaches in 1994, the 50th anniversary of the invasion that turned the tide in World War II. Once the horse's name was circulated around the Web, emails from veterans followed, a trickle at first and then a steady stream. Porter answered as many as he could and finally settled on inviting four to be his guests. 3 May 2013

Collins Not Jackie Robinson: First Active Gay Athlete in Major Sports Came Out over 30 Years Ago

As soon as NBA basketball player Jason Collins came out this week in an article in Sports Illustrated, he was lauded for his bravery and heroism for being the first active out male gay athlete in major professional team sports. Except that may not be an accurate description in light of a report that indicates Los Angeles Dodgers player Glenn Burke was open about his sexuality with teammates, opposing players, the media, and his front office in 1976, which means Collins's announcement is not as groundbreaking as has been portrayed. 3 May 2013

Frac Daddy, the three-year-old thoroughbred slated to run in Saturday's Kentucky Derby, was named as a tribute to oil field workers and the horse's name is a reference to hydraulic fracturing, a practice environmental groups and Hollywood actors have vehemently opposed. The horse's co-owner said he considers "this horse, named Frac Daddy with all the fracking going on, as a tribute to the oilfield workers of America." The horse drew the No. 18 post position, and is at 50-1 odds to win the Derby. 3 May 2013
