Cartel Chronicles

Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican border cities of Reynosa and Matamoros to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the Gulf Cartel if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by Ciudad Victoria’s “MA Navarro.”

CIUDAD VICTORIA, Tamaulipas — A series of banners hung by Los Zetas in this city blame the Tamaulipas Undersecretary of Public Safety of taking  juicy bribes from the Gulf Cartel in Reynosa. The move appears to be the latest chapter in an attempt to direct public attention from one cartel to the other.

The various banners were hung in various areas of Ciudad Victoria which is the capital of Tamaulipas and is about four hours south of the Texas border.  Breitbart Texas was able to obtain a photograph of one of those banners that are addressed to Tamaulipas governor Egidio Torre Cantu.

The banner reads :

“How is it possible that we have an accredited State Public Safety Secretariat (known as the SSP in Spanish)  working for the Gulf Cartel. (The secretariat) is manipulated by the current undersecretary of  SSP Colonel Juan Adolfo Gonzalez Valentin, the former public safety director in Reynosa who took $1 million from Comandante Toro in Reynosa for protection and to not jail the members of his cartel throughout the state. We know you quit in Reynosa because you are NOT CAPABLE, you failed the background checks. [expletive] corrupt.

Do something Mr. GOVERNOR It is all in your hands …”

The seven banners were hung in various places that include the governor’s offices, the Tamaulipas congress, the state public education building  and various other public venues. The banners were hung at night by the drug cartel that operates in Ciudad Victoria since 2010 — Los Zetas.

The current undersecretary of the SSP Col. Gonzalez was the public safety director in the border city of Reynosa from 2011 to 2013 when his position was removed as the local police force was disbanded to make room for the Tamaulipas State Police force.

The banners point to an alleged bribe by the current Gulf Cartel boss in Reynosa –Juan Manuel “Comandante Toro” Loiza Salinas to allegedly keep cartel operatives safe in Tamaulipas.

The banners appear to be a desperate attempt to discredit Gonzalez. The current Tamaulipas State Police force known as Fuerza Tamaulipas has in fact been delivering a series of heavy blows to both the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas.  The current state of the Gulf Cartel is very different from a few years back. The cartel has in fact split up into various regional cells that control particular cities and some of those cells have been at war with each other like the current struggle between the Reynosa faction known as Los Metros and the Matamoros faction known as Los Ciclones.

As Breitbart Texas previously reported, in Tamaulipas, the attempts to discredit authorities range from cartel funded protests , to stories printed and run on television that have been ordered by organized crime to narco-banners. The attempts to discredit authorities are usually targeted at federal authorities and in this case state authorities when they begin to damage the structure of organized crime groups. The move can only be described as a desperate attempt to get the public involved by sparking outrage.
