Eighty-Two Percent of TB Cases in Nebraska Are Foreign-Born

The number of U.S. born cases of active TB in the state actually declined from 8 in 2013 to 7 in 2014. But the number of foreign-born cases of active TB in Nebraska more than doubled in one year, from 13 in 2013, to 31 in 2014. According to the Centers for Disease Control, only 61.9 percent of the active TB cases in 2013, or 13 out of 21, were foreign-born.

Buddhist Monks in Myanmar Call for Hijab Ban

Buddhist monks in Myanmar have called for a government-enforced ban on headscarves in schools across the country. “When [Muslims] live in Myanmar, they need to obey the laws and regulations of the country. We are not targeting or attacking their religion,” U Pamaukkha, a monk calling for this ban, said.

EU Approves Military Action Against African Smugglers

The European Union on Monday approved a multi-phase military operation to defeat human smugglers who are trafficking migrants from Libya to Europe. Smugglers have been charging migrants thousands of dollars each to make the trip, and there’s no guarantee of reaching Europe or even of surviving.

New Zealander Sentenced to Prison for Bar Ad with Picture of Buddha Wearing Headphones

Freedom of speech and expression have come under scrutiny with a vengeance recently. In Burma (Myanmar), it was taken to a whole new level when a bar manager from New Zealand and his two Burmese colleagues were sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison–with hard labor—for posting an image on social media of a Buddha wearing headphones, in an attempt to promote unlimited frozen margaritas.
