On Wednesday, a man with a “high-powered rifle” shot at police responding to a domestic violence call, and fired more shots at a neighboring apartment complex, prompting police to lock down streets in the area and causing the Federal Aviation Administration to shut down flights to and from San Diego International Airport.

In the wake of the October 1 attack in the gun-free facilities of Umpqua Community College, the University of Maryland has released active shooter response guidelines that advise students to “run” and “hide.”

On September 21, a trainee working in an emergency response center that oversees a group of military bases–including Camp Pendleton–accidentally signaled an “active shooter” alert.

On September 14, Delta State University tweeted an “active shooter” alert, placing the Cleveland, Mississippi, campus on lockdown and urging all students to lock their doors.

In what is presented as an effort to mentally prepare students and faculty alike on how to react to an active shooter on campus, “certain schools” located in Oregon, Florida, and New Jersey have adopted “unannounced active-shooter drills.”
