The number of confirmed US cases of swine flu rose Thursday to 896 from 642 in 41 states, according to a daily report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The US death toll resulting from the swine flu remains at two, the report said.

The most recent World Health Organization figures show 1,893 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infections reported by 23 countries.

Mexico has recorded 42 deaths.

The only two deaths recorded outside Mexico are the two in the United States -- a woman in her thirties reported to have chronic health problems who died in a Texas hospital on Monday, and a Mexican child who was visiting relatives also in Texas and died last month.

Acting CDC head Richard Besser said Wednesday that he expects the swine flu outbreak to reach a pandemic level.
