The German media group Bertelsmann, which owns RTL television, said on Wednesday that it had raised its third quarter net profit despite falling sales owing to strict cost controls.

Operating profit gained 14 percent from the same period a year earlier to 284 million euros (425 million dollars) even though sales fell by 4.5 percent to 3.6 billion euros.

"The group?s strict cost discipline is producing positive fiscal developments," a statement noted.

Hit by slumping sales for its books and magazines, and weaker advertising revenues for its radio and television stations, Bertelsmann launched earlier this year a cost-cutting programme aimed at saving 900 million euros in 2009.

Bertelsmann did not provide details on different divisions, and is not listed on the stock exchange.

It's publicly listed RTL Group of radio and television stations said Tuesday that it had increased its profits owing to cost-cutting efforts.
