University of California, Berkeley economist Christina Romer has been chosen by US president-elect Barack Obama to chair the Council of Economic Advisers, ABC News reported Monday.

Romer, who studies the US economy, will be part of the economic team introduced by Obama at a press conference later Monday, along with New York Federal Reserve president Timothy Geithner as Treasury secretary and former Treasury secretary Larry Summers as director of the National Economic Council.

Romer is a member of the Business Cycle Dating Committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research, which decides when a recession has begun or ended. She also studies how tax cuts can stimulate economic growth.

The Council of Economic Advisers analyzes economic developments and government programs and recommends national economic policy to the US president.
